Meet Your Counselor

Elizabeth D. Mauritz Ph.D.

I came to philosophy through a curiosity about life. After starting college as a biology student, I found the ideas and questions raised in philosophy intriguing and complementary.

I am a Certified Philosophical Counselor through the American Philosophical Practitioners Association

Ph.D. Philosophy, Michigan State University

M.A. Philosophy (Environmental Ethics), University of North Texas

B.S. Philosophy and Biology, University  of Wisconsin Stevens Point

Higher education instructor with more than 10 years experience

I am a U.S. Army veteran and AmeriCorps alumni.

When I am not working or reading, I enjoy gardening, bird watching, yoga, youth sports (with my kids), and travel.

My approach

I take a personalized, client-centered approach to counseling sessions. I am intellectually omnivorous and pull ideas and inspiration from a variety of sources. My doctoral training emphasized ethics, social and political philosophy, philosophy of science, critical thinking/ logic, and American Pragmatism. Currently, I am exploring Existentialism and Eastern philosophies.

I employ a philosophical orientation to your concerns but vary in how much we turn directly to philosophy.  It will depend both on your interest and the relevance to the issues under consideration.

Regardless, my approach is to listen empathetically, recognizing past experiences and emotions, and moving forward with clarity, rational thinking and a future focus.

If you have any questions about philosophical counseling and my approach, please send me a message.  I am here to help!

Philosophy of Philosophy

Too often people see philosophy as entirely an academic subject. Although it plays an important role in the liberal arts, at its' core Philosophy is about understanding ourselves, thinking logically, and considering what is a good life. Philosophy is relevant to everyone and should not be relegated solely to the halls of academia. It is my pleasure to engage with anyone who is interested. No prior experience with philosophy is required.
